What You Need For A 4WD Holiday

Friday, February 18th, 2011

A 4WD holiday can be a tremendous amount of fun. If you and your family love the great outdoors, there are few other things that can bring the amount of satisfaction than to spend a couple of days away from the rush of city life in an environment where you are able to breathe fresh air every day.

The best way to get started is of course by buying a 4WD. It doesn’t have to be a new one. As a matter of fact, if you plan to “rough it” a lot, you don’t really want to do it with a brand new 4WD which cost more than most people’s house.

After that it’s a good idea to join a 4WD club. There are no doubt such a club near you. This way you will get to learn the ropes from people with a lot more experience than you. It’s also much more interesting to share the outdoors with people who think like you than to go all on your own.

Very often your 4WD trips will be into virgin country, where there will definitely not be a hotel or restaurant anywhere near. That means you have to arm yourself with the right equipment. Get a respectable quality tent that is able to withstand all the weather conditions you are likely to encounter on your trip. Your sleeping gear is also very important: A comfortable sleeping bag and a good quality camping mattress will go a long way to make sure that you have a good night’s rest.

Since there won’t be any restaurants in the vicinity, you will need to bring along the right equipment to prepare your own meals as well. A gas cylinder, a small gas stove and all the cooking utensils you will need are essential.

The right kind of clothing for the outdoors is also important. Take clothes for all weather types, especially if you will be venturing into the mountains. Weather there can often change without any warning. Tough yet comfortable clothing is a good idea in this regard.

Your club will most likely undertake quite a few trips during a year. Some will be longer trips, taking a week or more, and others will be weekend camping trips. For a novice, the latter is a good way to start. You will get the opportunity to test your equipment and buy anything that you didn’t think about before you venture on a longer trip where the equipment is more important.

A 4WD holiday will provide you with the chance to experience the outdoors in a way other people seldom can. You will visit remote spots of outstanding beauty. If there’s something you should never forget during all your trips, it’s this: be a responsible 4WD traveler. In the wrong hands, a 4WD can do substantial damage to the environment. Have fun, but always leave the area where you were driving or camping in the same condition you found it, allowing other people to also enjoy the great outdoors after you have left.

Follow These Tips For Road Safety

Thursday, February 17th, 2011

We spend so much more time on the roads these days than our previous generations did. Traveling has become more frequent as we go about our busy lives, going from home to recreation, and work. Keeping several safety rules in mind can make our trips safer and more pleasant for everyone. Road safety should be our goal as we drive our automobiles, and here are ten tips you can use.

1.) Sending a text or talking on a cell phone while driving can lead to accidents.

Our newspapers and televisions regularly report accidents that are caused by drivers using their cell phones to talk or text while operating their cars. Let’s stop the statistics where these tragedies are concerned. No message or conversation is important enough to risk your life and the lives of those around you or in your car. If you really need to convey a message, find a safe spot and pull over where you won’t be a hazard to other drivers on the road. Finish your conversation before proceeding with your journey.

2.) Don’t let distractions take all of your attention.

Scenic views, “people watching”, seeing a great car on the road, these are some of the joys of a road trip. But don’t let these distractions consume so much of your interest that they take your attention away from driving safely. Stay aware of what is ahead of and around you on the road and try to anticipate danger. A child throwing a ball, a dog near the road, or a pedestrian crossing the street are all situations where danger could occur. Enjoy your ride but stay aware.

3.) Give yourself plenty of time to reach your destination.

We all have days that start out badly. You sleep through the alarm, cut yourself while shaving, and just as you are taking that last sip of coffee, it spills down the front of your shirt. So off you go, rushing to get to work because you are now running late. But rushing behind the wheel can have disastrous results. Being in a hurry while driving makes us more apt to speed, roll through stop signs, and generally drive more recklessly. Force yourself to slow down. You may not be on time but you will have a lot better chance of arriving alive.

4.) Maintain proper air pressure in your tires and fluid levels in power steering, windshield washers and transmission.

Simple maintenance in the areas of tire air pressure, power steering fluid and transmission fluid will help to prevent accidents. Soft tires can explode suddenly as you round a bend, and a dirty windshield that can’t be washed because you are out of windshield fluid can make it so you can’t see the road. If your transmission is low on fluid, your car may not be able to pick up speed properly as needed.

5.) Maintain a safe distance from the car ahead of you.

Keep a safe distance back from the driver ahead. Sudden stops can lead to rear end collisions and injuries may result. Don’t follow so closely that you won’t be able to stop in time if the vehicle ahead of you slams on his brakes.

6.) Don’t get behind the wheel when you are angry.

Ours is not a fairy-tale world and we all have things that go on in our lives that make us angry. But when we are angry and also have to drive, the situation could become worse if we take our frustrations out behind the wheel. Try to take a deep breath and calm down so you can think clearly. A level headed driver operates his vehicle in a much safer manner than one who is seething in anger. Don’t let your feelings cause you to drive recklessly.

7.) Your radio volume should be low.

It’s great to drive along on a beautiful day with the songs coming over the radio. Maybe you enjoy singing along! Oldies? Rock and roll? No matter what kind of sounds you like as you are operating your car, remember that there are other sounds that you should be aware of and listening for. Don’t let your music drown them out. Ambulance sirens, fire trucks and police vehicles may come up behind you and if you can’t hear them you may not get out of their way in time. Enjoy your stereo but make sure you can also hear what is going on outside of the car.

Road safety is every drivers responsibility. When we pay attention to safety we make our journey so much more enjoyable for all who share our roadways. These tips will help you arrive at your destination without harm.

The main thing that most people are worried regarding is safety on the raod, learn more regarding car accessories and tonneau covers that will keep your car safe.
